At this point it’s universally known that introducing your young child to music is beneficial, and that beginning to learn an instrument at a young age can lead to a plethora of benefits. However, it’s oftentimes hard to find musically driven spaces for young children, that center around the learning of not just musical skills but practical skills they will later be able to transfer to a non-music lesson environment.
Especially between the ages of 18 months – 4 years, attention spans can vary so widely, and so much meaningful growth and development is rapidly occurring, my the focus is more on exploring the primary concepts around what it takes to be successful at an instrument.
Philosophy
As a childcare provider and music educator, I have a very unique understanding of how the young developing brain operates and it’s needs, and exactly how to adapt the skills that made me a successful musician to fit those needs.
Individualized, Child Led, and Play Based Learning
I utilize a model of learning I consider a combination of play based and child led learning. I come with a plan in mind and materials prepared, but always allow a certain level of explorative autonomy to the child, and be flexible to what they demonstrate their learning goals should be. This allows them to feel as if they have a level of control over what they’re learning, how they’re learning, and how expressive they are creatively, while also working within a personalized curriculum that sets clear expectations and progression milestones.
Combined General Music & Instrumental Focus
At this age, attention spans very greatly, and a student’s own likes and dislikes are constantly changing. want to make sure that the expectation is not on that child learning that specific instrument, but that the focus is more on the child learning about music and musical principals, using a multitude of different tools. However, if an instrumental focus is preferred, that instrument will be our primary tool, or will eventually be transitioned into the primary tool (depending on child’s age and ability to focus on the instrument).
Family and Parental Involvement
Parental involvement in these lessons will be required. I’ve worked with so many young children, and though you may not be heavily involved every week in our lessons, being present, aware and knowledgeable about what your child is working on is crucial to their long-term success. But don’t worry-this involvement will only require you to have fun with music related games, learn the very basics of musical instruments, and connect with your little one in a fun and creatively driven way!
Specific parental involvement on a week-to-week basis is highly dependant upon the child and their needs.
